The Collaborative for Health & Environment and Environmental Health Sciences are hosting a webinar with ICBE-EMF expert Dr. Ronald Melnick.
Scientists have long raised many concerns about the health impacts of exposure to cell phone and wireless radiation, also referred to as radiofrequency (RF) radiation. Two major studies – conducted by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the Ramazzini Institute – have examined the health effects of RF radiation emitted by cell phones and wireless devices in laboratory animals, focusing on cancer in particular. Both studies found increased cancer incidence in chronically exposed animals.
In this webinar, Dr. Ronald Melnick will provide an overview of the assessment of RF radiation carcinogenicity by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and address why the US FDA nominated wireless radiation as an issue for study by the NTP. Dr. Melnick will also explain why the WHO-commissioned systematic reviews on RF radiation health effects cannot be used as proof of safety, and the major methodological problems his team identified in a paper published in Environmental Health last year. He will present key critiques of the human RF radiation exposure limits used by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), as documented in the foundational publication by the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF).
He will then discuss his recent published analysis that used EPA methodology to estimate cancer risk from the NTP data and found that existing exposure limits for cell phone radiation are not adequately protective of human health. His analysis concluded the allowable exposures of the U.S. FCC and ICNIRP limits are at least 200 times too high to protect against cancer risk and 24 times too high to protect against reproductive harm. Dr. Melnick will provide a brief discussion on quantifying health risks based on experimental animal data.
About Ronald Melnick, Ph.D.
Ronald Melnick, Ph.D. was a senior toxicologist for more than 28 years in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and is Senior Science Advisor and past Chair for the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields. At the NTP, he led the design and interpretation of numerous toxicity/carcinogenicity studies, including the design of the NTP studies on cell phone radiofrequency radiation (RFR). Dr. Melnick has served on numerous scientific review boards and advisory panels, including the US EPA and the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, which classified RFR as a possible human carcinogen. Dr. Melnick spent one year at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and is a fellow (emeritus) of the Collegium Ramazzini.
